Gender Advisor Contributes to UN Commission on Status of Women

Written by: Raphael Baako

On February 3 and 4, EnCompass’ Senior Gender Advisor for the Transform: Primary Health Care project, Heran Abebe Tadesse, met with other Africa Regional Experts in Cairo to prepare the Ethiopian position paper for the 63rd session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, CSW63. The CSW is an annual 2-week gathering in New York City, where representatives of United Nations Member States, civil society organizations, and United Nations entities meet around International Women’s Day to discuss progress and gaps in implementing the Beijing Platform for Action and decide on further actions to promote women’s political, economic, and social rights.

Ms. Tadesse, who chairs the UN Women Ethiopia Country Office Advisory Group, feels the interconnectedness of the CSW63 theme is important: “Synergy among social protection systems, access to public services, and sustainable infrastructure is crucial. Careful planning and investment in this nexus will expedite the attainment of gender equality and women’s empowerment.”

Following her participation in the experts’ meeting, Ms. Tadesse met with the Ethiopian state minister on women and children’s affairs to share the contents of the position paper. She prepared a speech that the minister delivered during the pre-summit ministerial meeting gala. Ms. Tadesse will attend CSW63 as part of the Ethiopia delegation from March 11 to 22, 2019.
